The Four Agreements

Kimmy posed the question of what is a Four Agreements Deck.
Simply put, this is a book, by Don Miquel Ruiz, and is based on Toltec Wisdom.
It is a book that
  • Changed my life a few years back
  • Has guiding principles I try to live my life by
  • Spoke to me on a deeply personal level

The Four Agreements are

1. Be Impeccable With Your Word

Speak with integrity. Say only what you mean. Avoid using the word to speak against yourself or to gossip about others. Use the power of your word in the direction of truth and love.

2. Don't Take Anything Personally

Nothing others do is because of you. What others say and do is a projection of their own reality, their own dream. When you are immune to the opinions and actions of others, you won't be the victim of needless suffering.

3. Don't Make Assumptions

Find the courage to ask questions and to express what you really want. Communicate with others as clearly as you can to avoid misunderstandings, sadness and drama. With just this one agreement, you can completely transform your life.

4. Always Do Your Best

Your best is going to change from moment to moment; it will be different when you are healthy as opposed to sick. Under any circumstance, simply do your best, and you will avoid self-judgment, self-abuse and regret.

Pretty simple words of wisdom huh? To some it may be hokey but for me it is TRUTH.

Ever since I came across the book and started living my life this way, drama, hurt, the "oh no she didn't" anger, the need to be right, the defensive attitude, etc. diminished down to next to nothing.

The 48 card deck is a deck of coaster size cards with 12 cards corresponding to the each of the four agreements. Instead of reading the book from cover to cover again (which I do every couple of years), I pull the card box out from my home office desk, remove the entire deck, and randomly select one or two cards.

I do this to be reminded. I do this for a message to hear. I do this for a lesson to be learned.

Tonight's card? Ask for What You Want is on the front of the card and is part of the Don't Make Assumptions agreement. The back states, "Find the courage to ask for what you want. Others have the right to tell you yes or no, but you always have the right to ask. Likewise, everybody has the right to ask you for what they want, and you have the right to say yes or no."

Amen to that.

If you haven't read the book, obviously it is one I recommend.

Oh and Kimmy, A copy will be on the way to you this weekend.

Peace and Love Peeps.

This is a great post. I need to read that book cover to cover. I found it in my closet the other day and pulled it out -- I got it a year or two ago and started it but didn't finish it. Thanks for a nice summary of the main idea (God, I sound like a teacher, don't I?).
: )
